Circe Sorcery

In Homer’s Odyssey a remarkable feat of magic takes place as the evil witch Circe transforms Odysseus’ men into beasts. Keen to get them turned back, Odysseus races to Circe’s home and, before entering, eats a magical herb that the messenger god Hermes advises will protect him against her sorcery. The plant does prove protective and the hero succeeds in defeating the witch. While it all sounds a bit crazy, there is likely chemistry behind much of this strange tale.
